MOTION GRAPHIC DESIGN

Premier League LED Design for Selhurst Park Stadium

CLIENT: Crystal Palace F.C. and Facebank Group
LOCATION: Selhurst, London

Brief

Facebank sought to promote their new “Fan of the Match” app, which digitally decorates users’ faces with Crystal Palace’s design. The challenge was to create an eye-catching ad that could compete with major brand advertisements displayed on the LED screens during Premier League matches

Facebank became Crystal Palace's sleeve partner in 2021, and to show their support, they created the "Fan of the Match" app.

Facebank had recently become Crystal Palace’s sleeve partner and wanted the ad to match the visual impact of big brands like Monster Energy and Puma. The ad had to meet specific technical requirements in three dimensions, all in a 30-second duration at 25fps:

3380×80 (priority for maximum visibility)
1920×1080 (standard HD)
1280×720

Software Used:

  • Adobe After Effects
  • Adobe Photoshop—for creating realistic face paint mockups.

The Challenge:

Creating a compelling advertisement that stood out in a competitive environment was crucial. The ad needed to be dynamic and visually engaging to capture fans’ attention from a distance, while fitting into the elongated format without appearing cluttered. Additionally, there were uncertainties around using stock photos, which opened the door for creative experimentation.

My Creative Proposition:

To address the challenge, I proposed using light colors to enhance visibility and clarity, particularly in the long format. Instead of overwhelming the screen with too many elements, I suggested structuring the 30-second ad into two repeating segments. This approach ensured the core message was communicated effectively and kept viewers engaged throughout the loop.

They were impressed with the initial design but requested further simplification for greater impact. They also provided a revised Facebank logo, which I seamlessly integrated into the final design.

The animation was displayed approximately every six minutes throughout the loop.

Upon completing this initial task, I was invited to assist in creating advertisements for upcoming Premier League games at Selhurst Park. Here are some of them:

Facebank logo animation. I traced all the polygons from scratch because they don’t have a vector file of their logo. It takes a lot of work, but I’m happy with how it turned out

“Swerve” (another app by Facebank)

here’s the final design I crafted. I incorporated various effects based on their logo to capture the essence and vibe of the app.

And since Crystal Palace was playing Chelsea, I was told to make a similar “Fan of the Match” but with a new filter from a Brazilian team called “Botafogo,” whose partnership hasn’t been revealed in public yet.

Results

  • The final design was well-received and effectively used during various Premier League games at Selhurst Park.
  • I recalled the importance of simplification to ensure designs stand out and convey messages clearly, especially for an ad with a limited duration.
  • For the horizontal LED display designs, I successfully implemented a seamless loop on both ends, despite the design’s complexity. Testing the loop in a mockup was crucial, as it was challenging to predict fit and alignment without seeing it in a mockup.
